Protonym: Ponera commutata
Authorship Roger, 1860: 311
Forms w.q.
Locality NO LOCALITY GIVEN
Primary type information Primary type material: 1 syntype worker, 1 syntype queen. Primary type locality: none given. Primary type depository: unknown (perhaps MNHN if syntypes still in existence).
Type notes 1) Roger, 1860 nominated Neoponera commutata as the new species name for the Neotropical specimens of Paltothyreus tarsatus Fabricius, 1798, sensu Latreille, 1802a: 200, misidentification. Neither Latreille, 1802a nor Roger cited a Neotropical type locality for the taxon. Two years earlier Smith, 1858a: 94, had observed that this was a Neotropical species, not Afrotropical (see his discussion), and gave Guyana and Brazil (Pará) as localities. 2) Perhaps there were more syntypes originally, but Latreille, 1802a: 220, pl. 7, figs. 44A , 44B, illustrates one of each caste.
