Etymology | Menozzi described Pogonomyrmex intermedius by comparing it to two other Chilean taxa, Pogonomyrmex bispinosus and Pogonomyrmex semistriata, indicating that the sculpturing of Pogonomyrmex intermedius was similar to that of Pogonomyrmex semistriata, and much more pronounced than in Pogonomyrmex bispinosus, but that the gaster was smooth and shining as in Pogonomyrmex bispinosus (whereas the gaster of Pogonomyrmex semistriata was finely striate). Thus, the name Pogonomyrmex intermedius appears to be derived from this species having characters intermediate to those of Pogonomyrmex bispinosus and Pogonomyrmex semistriata. Primary type information | Primary type material: lectotype worker (by designation of Johnson, 2021: 89). Primary type locality: lectotype Chile: Bíobío, Volcán de Chillan, 1700 m, #204 (Prof. W. Goetsch). Primary type depository: GGC. Primary type specimen: ANTWEB1008896. (Source: Johnson, 2021: 89.) |
Type notes | Original material: 9 syntype workers, Chile: Volcán de Chillán, 1700 m., no. 204 (W. Goetsch), deposited in IEUB. 1 syntype worker designated as lectotype by Johnson, 2021: 89, 8 syntype workers would now be paralectotypes. |
