Etymology Latin tristis means gloomy, sad, shadowy. Named after the almost completely microreticulate head and mesosoma, which gives the species a subdued appearance, in contrast to the highly shiny species such as Aphaenogaster subterranea or Aphaenogaster holtzi.
Primary type information Primary type material: holotype worker. Primary type locality: Greece: Pel. Lakonia, 3.2 km NW Polidroso, 1000 m, 37.19874 N / 22.57603 E, 18.vi.2016 (L. Borowiec). Primary type depository: MNHW. Primary type specimen: LBC-GR02140.
