Ponera ruficornis Spinola, 1851b: 53 (w.) BRAZIL (Pará). Neotropic.
Primary type information: Primary type material: holotype worker (specimen consists of parts of 2 species). Primary type locality: Brazil: Pará, Belém, 1846 (V. Ghiliani). Primary type depository: MRSN. Type notes: 1) Emery, 1893j: 2, comments that the specimen consists of the head and prothorax of Dolichoderus sp., the rest of the body is Platythyrea sp. 2) Emery, 1911e: 30 (footnote) repeats this information but Brown, 1975: 9, refers Ponera ruficornis to Platythyrea as “nomen dubum et oblitum Emery, 1911e: 28”. 3) This compound specimen is probably best regarded as an unidentifiable taxon, incertae sedis in Ponera.
