Meranoplus intrudens Smith, 1876d: 609, pl. 11, fig. 7 (w.q.m.) SOUTH AFRICA. Afrotropic.
Primary type information: Primary type material: lectotype worker (by designation of Bolton, 1974a: 42). Primary type locality: lectotype South Africa: Natal, Durban, Weenen Dist., in acacia thorns, “76,48.Natal” (J.M. Hutchinson). Primary type depository: BMNH. Secondary type information: Secondary type material: 2 paralectotype workers, 2 paralectotype males. Secondary type locality: same as for lectotype. Secondary type depositories: BMNH, MCZC. Type notes: 1) The queen described by Smith, 1876d is absent from BMNH, presumed lost or destroyed (Bolton, 1974a: 43). 2) BMNH accessions register gives “1876 no. 48. Meranoplus intrudens. Natal. Presented by F. Smith. This species was found by Mr J. Monkhouse Hutchinson inhabiting thorns of a species of Acacia in the Weenen District, Natal”.
