Myrmecocystus melliger subsp. californicus Creighton, 1950a: 445 (w.) U.S.A. (California). Nearctic.
Primary type information: Primary type material: holotype worker. Primary type locality: U.S.A.: California, Weed (A.C. Cole). Primary type depository: LACM. Secondary type information: Secondary type material: paratype workers (number not stated, “numerous”). Secondary type locality: same as for holotype. Secondary type depositories: LACM, OSUC, USNM. Type notes: The identity and status of this taxon have not been ascertained. It is therefore included in Formica (combination by Snelling, 1969b: 2) as a taxon at species rank, to dissociate it from its original combination in Myrmecocystus, and to separate it from its original rank as a subspecies of Myrmecocystus melliger. The name Formica californica is not mentioned in Snelling, 1976: 1-163 (the revision of Myrmecocystus).
